Orthognathic surgery involves the treatment of facial skeletal growth problems. Because of abnormalities in the growth of the facial skeletal, misaligned jaws result. The misalignments may exist at birth or develop slowly as a result of abnormal growth patterns. Malalignments of the jaws may also result from a trauma to the face. Corrective surgery repositions the misalignments to insure that teeth meet correctly and function properly. Facial cosmetics are improved. Patient with malaligned jaws may experience difficulty chewing, speech problems, and compromised esthetics. The consultation process includes plaster casts, computer imagind studies, x-rays, and detailed analysis through physical examinition of the patient.

Who Needs Orthognathic Surgery?

People who can benefit from orthognathic surgery include those with an improper bite or jaws that are positioned incorrectly. Jaw growth is a gradual process and, in some instances, the upper and lower jaws may grow at different rates. The result can be a host of problems that can affect chewing function, speech, long-term oral health, and appearance. Injury to the jaw and birth defects can also affect jaw alignment. While orthodontics alone can correct bite problems if only the teeth are involved, orthognathic surgery may be required if the jaws also need repositioning.

Difficulty in the following areas should be evaluated :

   • difficulty in chewing, biting or swallowing

   • speech problems

   • open bite

   • protruding jaw

   • breathing problems

   • recessive (small) jaw
